MESSAGE
The allocation of certain cubits of land to God is a reminder of the fact that the earth is the Lord’s and the people who live in it (Psalm 24:1). This also suggests that God is not only interested in things we consider ‘spiritual’ but in earthly matters such as land. Vs.1‐3 also remind us of God’s holiness since the land allocated to him as grounds of worship need to be kept holy.
Let us note the allocation of land to take care of the need of various categories of people – priests, ministers, Levites, all of Israel and Princes (vs.5‐7). Notice the reason God asks for this to be done (v.8). If all people, including us, are content with God’s provision for us, then no one needs to be oppressed. Because the princes of Israel in particular have failed in this, God addressed them directly in v.9.
The message here is not for our royal and political leaders and princes only but anyone entrusted with leadership responsibility! The use of accurate scales and measurements (v.10) is to ensure that people do the right things in contracts, for example, in road construction. Failure to meet the set standards in any given contract is a form of corruption. This is crippling our nations. What can we do as Christians to fight corruption in our countries?
