Bible Text: Philippians 1:27-30
Memory Verse: “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit,d striving together as one for the faith of the gospel.” Philippians 1:27, NIV
In the Roman Military, standing firm is a military term for holding on to a position even while one is under attack.
It implies the courage to hold your ground because of your allegiance to the Roman Emperor, even when others may flee from the battle front when an enemy seems to be defeating or conquering you remain firm till the end.
Apostle Paul, while undergoing persecution, encouraged the Philippian church to stand firm in the Spirit. He admonished them to endure the opposition with unity. He urged the Philippians to stand firm with a united disposition of spirit.
The Christian life is a struggle at times. When we run the race standing firm in unity, we can attain victory. If the church wants to be strong and victorious over the enemy, and be effective and fruitful in mission, Christians must strive and contend together, united with the same mind and heart. Standing firm against spiritual opposition is only possible because of God’s power that is made available to us through the Holy Spirit. Each one of us is called to stand firm through the power of the One and the same Holy Spirit that is made sufficient for us all.
Insight: “Standing”, or “standing firm”, is often mentioned in the Bible in association with warfare.
