SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL FOR   JUNE 23, 2022 (THE DANGER OF DEPENDING ON OUR SENSE)

TOPIC : THE DANGER OF DEPENDING ON OUR SENSE

Opening Prayer: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: Genesis 27:18‐29

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Jacob comes with a platter of food prepared by his mother in a special way Isaac likes (v.18). Because of the major role Rebekah played in this deceitful scheme, she was perhaps more blameworthy than Jacob. However, Jacob cannot in any way be exonerated. He lied to his father. Notice how many times he lied (vs.19,20&24). He takes God’s name in vain (v.20). Do we also behave like Jacob sometimes?

When we tell lies and use the name of God to deceive others for our selfish purposes, we are behaving like Jacob. Isaac had his doubts when Jacob came before him with the food (vs.22‐24). How did he choose to detect the true identity of the person before him (vs.26&27)? Isaac depended on his senses, using physical parameters to convince himself that the one standing before him was Esau.

But he was greatly mistaken. He bestows his blessings on Jacob thinking it was Esau. Depending on our senses rather than listening to God’s voice may have grave consequences. We should learn to depend on God for guidance through His Word and the Holy Spirit. Our senses may fail us woefully.
