• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?
MESSAGE
God summoned Israel’s leaders to come up to Him. God enjoys our fellowship, alone or in groups. This included Moses, Aaron and his sons (priests), with 70 others. But note their limits (vs.2,14). Other leaders worshipped at a distance (v.1). What could explain this difference (Exodus 33:7,12; Numbers 12:6-8).
Israel confirmed their covenant with God, a solemn promise, in one voice. Notice their pledge (vs.3,7b) and at least five things Moses did to seal this agreement (vs.4b-8). What do you think was significant about writing down the commands and commitments (v.4), building an altar, and setting up twelve pillars (v.4)? Moses also involved youth in the worship rituals (v.5), sealed with the blood of sacrifice, and God’s word. Many communities exclude youth from socio-political and religious mainstreams. Could this one day happen in Africa, or is it happening already?
God called Moses further apart after the Priests and the Elders have enjoyed the fellowship with God for a moment (vs.9-12). Observe Joshua’s special privilege as Moses’ aide (v.12). Moses carefully put structures in place to ensure orderliness at the camp during his absence (v.14), probably learning from Jethro (Exodus 18:13-26). Godly, experienced leaders can still learn practical wisdom from others.
CLOSING PRAYER
