TOPIC: OBEY THE LORD AND LIVE
OPENING PRAYER: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.
Scripture: Ezekiel 20:21-32
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?
There are great blessings in obeying God. Following His decrees and keeping His laws bring us life (v.21, see John 6:63). We are God’s chosen people. Living by His Word sets us apart and makes us distinct. And there are consequences when we forsake the Lord and ignore His Word. Such a life is blasphemy against God, a life of non-dependence. We provoke God to anger and we defile ourselves with the things we put in the place of God and His Word (vs. 27,28, 30).
Not observing the Sabbath as prescribed by the Lord was one of the charges God brought against the people and leaders of Israel (vs.12,13, 24). God rested on the seventh day of creation, to give us an example of the need for rest and renewal after days of hard work. We should intentionally balance work and rest as we carry out our daily businesses. This too, matters to God. Nothing can rightly take the place of God.
When Israel forsook the Lord, He also gave them up to statutes that were not good. These were the complex rituals and taboos of paganism (v.25). We will do ourselves good, if we follow the Lord faithfully and carefully obey His Word.
