TOPIC: A Prayer for Deliverance and Guidance
Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.
Scripture: Psalms 143:1-12
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
This prayer of David addresses two needs in our lives – deliverance and guidance. David appealed to God’s faithfulness and righteousness (v.1) because he realised that as mortals, full of moral failings and liable to God’s judgment, those were the only things that can qualify us for God’s intervention (v.2).
Incidences of hopelessness and depression are on the increase in our society due to very difficult life challenges. These are like the enemy that David addressed in vs.3-4. Check vs.5-6 for how he responded to the enemy’s attack. Remembering God’s acts of deliverance in the past can help us trust him for victory in the present. Go through vs.7-12 again and outline some lessons we can learn from David about prayers. Observe how David desired God’s leading (vs.8b, 10).
One major help we can receive in times of trouble is God’s guidance about what to do next. “Destroy all my foes” (v12b) is not a licence for “fall-down-and-die” prayers, when compared with Jesus’ teachings and example (Matthew 5:43-45; 1 Peter 2:23).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Make v.10 your prayer for today. • Thank God in anticipation of the dawn of a productive and happy week.
