SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE FOR JULY 6, 2022 (THE DREADED MEETING)

TOPIC : THE DREADED MEETING

Opening Prayer: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.

Scripture: Genesis 33:1‐20

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Jacob’s prayer in 32:9‐11 shows how desperate he was with the thought of meeting his brother, Esau. That he resorted to praying shows how much faith he had in God. This faith was further strengthened after his encounter with the angel. We must note that when our relationship with God is right, prayer can move any mountain (James 5:16). Thus equipped, it is not surprising to see Esau’s friendly attitude to Jacob (v.4, cf. Proverbs 16:7)).

What do you think of Jacob’s preparation to meet his brother in vs.1&2? While it is not wrong to plan, we must note that it is not our wise planning that gives victory but the Lord (Zechariah 4:6). That Esau accepted Jacob’s gifts after persuasion might mean that he forgave his brother reluctantly. What do you think of Jacob’s objection to going with Esau’s team and his explanation?

When in doubt of the sincerity of someone who wants to help you, ask God for wisdom to handle the situation. God stood by His promise to help and protect Jacob. He led him and his family safely to Shechem. Jacob built an altar to appreciate the Lord who protected him. What do you learn from this?
