SCRIPTURE: ROMANS 2:1-16
Question(s) for Reflection• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
MESSSAGE
Do you sometimes find yourself condemning others for their sins and way of life? What does v.1 say about such a judgemental attitude? We may not be idol worshippers, homosexuals or violent people as described in yesterday’s passage but could be as evil before God in some other ways (James 2:10-11).
Take note of God’s principles of judgment (vs.2-16). It is according to truth (v.2), according to deeds (vs.6-11; cf. Matthew 16:27; 2 Corinthians 5:10), and according to the light that a person has (vs.12-15: cf. Romans 1:19-20). Sometimes we worry so much about those who have never heard about Jesus Christ. People will not be judged for what they don’t know; but for what they do with what they know. Those who know God’s word will be judged by it.
Those who have never heard about Christ know right from wrong and they will be judged for violating God’s law as written in their conscience. All men are guilty before God and all need to accept God’s offer of forgiveness and righteousness that comes only through Christ.
Practice/Word ApplicationWhat Next? Read Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:1-5 and reflect on the implication of judging others. Pray for God’s forgiveness where you have been guilty of doing this.
