MESSAGE
It is instructive that once the Tabernacle is complete, the next instructions we encounter have to do with the “altar of burnt offerings”. It was the first thing that one encountered immediately upon entering the court. Its significance lay in the purpose for which it was prescribed. Upon it, a fire was continually burning (cf. Leviticus 6:12-13), and sacrifices were offered many times a day.
Whereas the Ark of the Covenant together with the tablets of the Law were the symbols of the presence of Jehovah in the Tabernacle, the altar of burnt offerings was the active medium of approach and communication with Him. It depicts the great sacrifice that Christ was to make on the cross. It was meant to communicate to us that without the shedding of blood there would be no access to God’s gift of salvation and forgiveness of sin (Hebrews 9:22).
All that Moses was instructed to do was to be in line with the prototype that was shown to him (vs.8). This principle signifies that if our worship must be acceptable to God, it has to be on His terms. The Israelites were to supply clear oil of pressed olives for the temple light, so that the temple light will keep burning (v.20). All of us who have received God’s gift of salvation have the responsibility to consecrate our lives, as we keep the fire of our devotion burning every day.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing PrayerOh Lord, help me to truly do all I can to keep the fire burning wherever I go.
