SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL FOR JULY 18, 2022 (THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE)

TOPIC : THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.

SCRIPTURE: Genesis 35:16‐29

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

MESSAGE

After such a wonderful time dwelling in God’s presence and being assured of His blessings, one may not anticipate any sorrowful event. For Jacob, however, it was another moment of mourning (vs.16‐20). Israel experienced the loss of a loved one to childbirth.

How did he handle this (vs.18‐21)? He quickly changed the name of the child to Benjamin instead of Benoni and moved on with his life. It could be that through his fellowship with God, he had obtained strength to face the future. When we meet trials or troubles in life, we should not allow them to wear us down. Rather, we should rely on God who gives the inner strength to move on with life despite the situations around us.

Reflect on v.22. Reuben’s sexual sin cost him his inheritance and place of leadership as the first born (Genesis 49:3‐4; compare 1 Chronicles 5:1). The sin you may think is hidden will surely find you out (Numbers 32:20‐23). Despite all these troubles, Israel was blessed with many sons (vs.23‐27). He is finally, where he is supposed to be, dwelling in the land of promise and saw the end of his father (vs.28‐29).

Closing Prayer
• Father, help me to always follow your will no matter the challenges on my way.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Romans 8:32; Hosea 7‐9
