SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR SEPTEMBER 4, 2022 (SOUND COUNSEL FOR CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE)
TOPIC: SOUND COUNSEL FOR CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE
Opening Prayer: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?
MESSAGE
Naomi shows concern for Ruth to re‐marry and have a good home of her own. How? Read v.1 and Chapter 1:8‐9. It is the desire of responsible parents to see their children marry suitable spouses and make stable homes, fulfilling God’s purpose for marriage. While cultural requirements for marriage may differ, how should chastity and holiness play a part in Christian relationships (vs.3, 4, 14)?
What lesson can you draw from the testimony Boaz gave concerning Ruth in v.10? Whether it is the first time one is getting married or it is re‐marriage, the focus of a young woman must not be on whether the man is rich or poor. Rather, what security could they find in a loving husband (v.1). Marriage is a serious matter and must not be taken casually (v.18). Patience and seeking the face of the Lord are required.
Parents and Marriage Counsellors should be prepared to help young people on mate selection. Proverbs 6: 20,23‐26 also outline some lessons parents are to rehearse especially to teenagers.
Practice/Word Application
And So: Be careful that you do not consider cultural factors above the spiritual as you counsel young people about marriage.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• May I, dear Lord, positively influence young men and women intending to marry, so new homes would bring glory to your name.
