Daily Guide 2 May 2022 | Scripture Union Devotional

Topic: Living Faith

Opening Prayer: Let me know more of you today dear Lord as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: 1 Peter 1:1‐12

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?

OUTLINE

Paul addressed his letter to Christian refugees who were facing persecution in present‐day Europe and Middle East.

During the Roman Empire, Christians were sometimes considered anti‐social and a threat to the unity of the Empire. Like today, they did not live by the moral values of their cultures. They refused to worship the Roman gods, participate in temple rites, or to pledge unquestioning allegiance to the emperor by honouring him as a god or indulge in outright emperor worship.

Peter wrote to encourage them. Notice how the Apostle Peter describes Christ’s followers (vs.1,2). We have been chosen by God and set apart by the Holy Spirit so we may be obedient to Jesus Christ. God chose us not because of what we have done or who we are but based on His eternal wisdom. God provided salvation for mankind out of His mercy.

What trials does the Christian face (v.6)? God allows trials so that we can discover our own weaknesses and His infinite strength (v.7). Christ had to suffer before He was glorified. But human beings cannot fully understand the mysteries of suffering, pain or incurable diseases. Not even the prophets (vs.10‐11), or other religious leaders did.

Practice/Word Application
Reflection: Millions of people around the world are displaced and forced to live in refugee camps, many of these in Africa. How can we help improve their lot?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, grant me the grace to cope with today’s trials and temptations.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Romans 16:20; Judges 18, 19, Ruth 1, 2
