Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 March 2022 MESSAGE
Today’s text reminds us of God’s discomfort with sin and the provisions He has made for both forgiveness and cleansing. Before the advent of Christ, God’s provision for sin is through sacrifices. Note from v.18 that the sacrifice for cleansing is at the beginning of a new year and in the first month of the year. God does not want us to keep bearing the burden of guilt of sins committed in the past.
Let us also note the role of the blood, which is a pointer to the blood of Jesus which will be the ultimate remedy for cleansing from all sins. Note also how often the sacrifices must be done (vs.20‐21). While we have been saved from these repetitive sacrifices, we must not take for granted the need to always be in the state of ‘clean hands and pure hearts’ before God. We have in 46:1‐2a the privilege and honour accorded the leader (the prince).
These are however not without their limits (v.2b). Leadership also has related responsibility (vs.4‐7). The order of entry and exit (46:9) may be more than ensuring orderliness. Perhaps it has spiritual meaning also. According to one commentator, this is ‘to signify that each should go out of the sanctuary another man (changed person) than he came in.’ Does our worship of the Lord leave lasting impact on us?
