SEEK DAILY (NBC) DAILY DEVOTIONAL April 28, 2022 (FRUIT OF REPENTANCE)
TOPIC: FRUIT OF REPENTANCE
Bible Text: Matthew 3:6-8
Memory Verse: “Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.” Matthew 3:8, NIV
Fruit is the physical manifestation of the potential inside a tree. Every tree is given to produce a type of fruit, and any tree that fails to produce fruit is adjudged a failure. Jesus Christ placed a curse on a fig tree that had no fruit when He approached the tree. How critical it is for a tree to produce fruit!
As people gathered around John the Baptist at River Jordan, submitting themselves for the baptism of John, he warned them to produce fruit in keeping with repentance. The meaning is that, prior to their repentance at Jordan River, they were producing fruit, but the fruits are bad. Galatians 5:19-21b describes the fruit this way:
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God” (Galatians 5:21c, NIV).
On the contrary, Christians are required to produce the fruit of repentance. The fruit of repentance refers to the fruit of the Holy Spirit which contains love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23). Allow the Holy Spirit to produce these fruit in your life.
Insight: The beauty of a Christian life is the presence of the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
Prayer: Oh Lord God, fill my life with your Spirit anew!
