Bible Text: 1 John 4:1, 4-6
TOPIC: DISCERNING THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH AND ERROR
“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the sprits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1, NIV
Few years ago, a supposedly popular Christian radio presenter caused a stir in the Christian community in Nigeria by saying that paying of tithe is not biblical. He used Bible passages and worldly assumptions to support his point. Many prominent Christian leaders rose against it while some supported him.
Apostle John reveals to the church that many false prophets would rise, misinterpret and misuse the Word of God because they are of the world. However, the children of God are from God and it is only those who are not from God that can be deceived by their words. Our generation is one that now rely more on intellectual and academic prowess to interpret the Bible. There is an urgent need for all Christians to be diligent students of the Bible.
You should stand for the truth, pray for the spirit of discernment to differentiate between what is godly and ungodly. There are a whole lot of distorted and wrong teachings going on now. Only a spirit-filled, discerning and Bible-rooted Christian can withstand their onslaught. Are you deeply rooted in God’s Word?
Insight: Be an intimate friend of Jesus by reading the Scriptures and listening to His voice.
Prayer: Father, please fill me with the spirit of discernment for my generation.
