Daily Guide 6 June 2022 | Scripture Union Devotional

Read and Meditate on Today’s Scripture Union Daily Guide for Monday 6th June 2022. May the Lord bless you through His Word, Amen!

Topic: Death and Burial of Sarah

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.

Scripture: Genesis 23:1‐20

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Losing a spouse is always a difficult moment no matter the number of years one has been in marriage. Consider Abraham’s state after the death of his wife, Sarah (vs.1‐2). Observe the high regard with which the surrounding people held Abraham (vs.6,14). Despite his advanced age (about 137 years old), notice his humility (vs.7,12). How did this godly attitude help build respect for him before the people?

Abraham was clearly a contented person. He offered to pay the full price for a burial site despite the free offer (vs.4,8,9,13,16), and ensured proper witnessing and documentation (vs.17‐20). Why would you think these were necessary? He knew his limits and disadvantages and took precautions (v.4). Often, heirs reclaim land after a father’s death.

Conflict over land has caused much tension and destruction, even wars, among relatives, communities and nations. If only we could be prudent as Abraham! Note that God had promised Abraham all along that he would inherit all of Canaan. However, he waited to take his blessings slowly, even if it required buying one field or cave at a time.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Lord, please help me to live as a pilgrim in this world as I look forward to eternity with you.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Exodus 1:20 ‐ 21; 1 Chronicles 18, 19; Mark 5
