Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.
Hebrews 11: 20-31
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow? • What is God revealing to me in this passage?
When believers taste God’s goodness, they desire to speak about it to others. They pass the message on so that others will come to receive the benefits of knowing God. They wish others well and leave spiritual inheritance for them. It is this faith that inspired Isaac to bless Jacob and Esau. Later Jacob in turn blessed Joseph’s sons. Indeed, faith is prophetic. Joseph foresaw the exodus of the people of God to the Promised Land. The desire to be with his people in that land prompted him to give instructions concerning burial of his bones (v.22; see Genesis 50:24-25).
Consider what Moses’ parents did, defying the king’s edict and the reason for their action (v.23). Their step of faith had lasting effect on Moses. He found it more fulfilling to be treated with contempt along with the people of God (vs.24-28). Faith sees disgrace for Christ’s sake as of greater value than the pleasures of this world.
Faith, not force, opened a passage through the Red Sea. Faith for the Israelites, and force for the Egyptians were moving in the same direction in this episode, into deep waters. We note however, that faith resulted in salvation for the Israelites but force, to destruction of the Egyptians.
