Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
This passage addresses some issues of which many of us are guilty. Note that interfering in an argument shows foolishness (v.17). Deceiving another person betrays confidence. Even when you claim you were joking, the one you deceived will not trust you again (vs.18-19). Also gossiping or quarrelling reveals hatred and malice. It separates friends and families and makes them foes.
Take note of the other vices mentioned in vs.18-19? Lying or deception can lead to distrust and usher in permanent damage to relationship. These and many others cited here (vs.20-28) are linked with misuse of our tongues. The tongue has done much harm and what James 3:2-8 says concerning this is very true. The tongue verbalizes what we harbour in our hearts.
We speak evil words from our defiled hearts (Matthew 12:34-37). Isaiah saw himself as a man of unclean lips. He cried out to God for cleansing and God did that for him (Isaiah 6:5-7). Are you wood or talebearer, always kindling strife (v. 20 -22). If we too cry out to God as Isaiah did, He will graciously heal our unwholesome tongues and evil hearts. Read vs.23-28 again and note what it says, there is always a boomerang, beware! V.27 God sees and examines the heart (Jeremiah 17: 9).
