Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey? • Is there any prayer for me to remember?
Today we have a direct command to pray for our leaders. Often, members of the church believe that the pastor is the most prayerful and owes them the duty to pray for them. However, they forget that he is the shepherd. Strike the shepherd and the sheep will scatter (Zechariah 13:7b). This means then that our leaders need constant and consistent prayer support so they would lead God’s people aright and finish well. We also need to pray for our political leaders. What is the content of the request in v.18? The leader that is responsible to God and is aware of his responsibility will constantly pray for the people.
Notice the content of his prayer for all who receive his message (vs.20-21)? It is a benediction – a prayer of blessing. The example given in this passage does not only end with the leaders, but we should develop the habit of praying for one another and for the body of Christ. It is in keeping with the standards and instructions of the word of God and prayerfully allowing the love of God to flow in the fellowship that we will fulfill the will of God for our lives and our generation.
• Action: If you do not have a prayer list, get one today and list the people you will be praying for daily including your spiritual and political leaders
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
• Lord, please make me an intercessor for my leaders and my generation. • Ask for the spirit of grace and excellence in all you do.
