The shepherd shows great love for the one lost sheep (vs.12-13). Similarly, God, our Great Shepherd, does not desire the loss of any of his little creatures (v.14). He values each person. He seeks, restores and rejoices when his straying children are safely restored to the fold. The Christian community is charged with the responsibility of seeking those who have gone astray, feeling discouraged or lonely and losing hope and meaning in life. The search must continue until they are found and restored to fellowship.
Restoration comes as we share the gospel of Christ with, and extend the love of Christ to them. Interpersonal relationships – Close as they are, the teeth and the tongue sometimes clash (Africa adage). It is normal for people in a group to step on each other’s toes. It is important to sort this out at the earliest possible time. Notice the three steps Jesus outlines to restore harmony, unity and love and who takes the first step (vs.15-20).
Starting off privately gives a chance for apologies and possible reconciliation. Notice that the context of vs.18-20 is settling of dispute. The Christian community has delegated authority from the Lord to sort out internal disputes (1 Corinthians 6:1-8).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
• Oh Lord, help me to daily assist the less privileged among your children and promote harmony in our community. • Pray for an understanding of God,s priorities for these times.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 49:8; Deut. 28-29; Acts 7:1-21
