Scripture Union Daily Guide 2 February 2022 MESSAGE
Jesus was an honoured guest in the home of a respectable religious leader, (v.36). Strangely, this man failed to offer Him the courtesies that were customary in the culture, (v.44). As the proverb says, “You never have a second chance to make a first impression.” One woman decided to gate‐crash the party; and her appearance gave her away as a sinner. (Please note that this is not Mary Magdalene, and she is different from Mary of Bethany who anointed Jesus in Mark 14). There are several questions we can ask ourselves to help us understand the situation more clearly. Many people came to Jesus out of curiosity or to see His miracles. What do you think was the reason for this woman coming to Jesus in the first place? How did she compare with the Pharisee in the opinion of the public? Why was she crying at the feet of Jesus? What did her perfume and her kissing of the feet of Jesus Christ demonstrate? How did Jesus Christ answer the unspoken question of the Pharisee in v.39? How did she compare with the Pharisee in the opinion of Jesus Christ?
