SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL FOR APRIL 25, 2023 (LITTLE BY LITTLE, THE ENEMY IS DEFEATED AND DRIVEN OUT)
TOPIC: LITTLE BY LITTLE, THE ENEMY IS DEFEATED AND DRIVEN OUT
OPENING PRAYER: Lord, I pray that you lead me into your truth as I meditate on your word in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE: Exodus 23:20-33
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 4: Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
MESSAGE
Notice the series and scope of promises God made to the Israelites (vs.20, 25-28, 30), the purpose and the conditions for enjoying them (vs.21-25). God’s angel going ahead of Israel was a sure evidence of God’s personal presence (vs.20,23), as he brought them to a place God had prepared for them. But note the stern warnings: to carefully listen and obey God’s command. Check additional requirements for living and prospering in the Promised Land (vs.31-33). Obedience to God’s word is an undeniable requirement for enjoying God’s presence and His promises in our lives as believers (vs.25-26).
In vs.29-30, observe God’s gracious act of driving away enemies “little by little”, not at once (see also Exodus 13:17). How may this be sometimes misunderstood? Could this explain some delayed breakthroughs? The many “I will” in today’s passage indicate both God’s personal role as well as Israel’s duty in driving out the people from the land they would occupy (vs.28,29,30 and 31).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
