Question(s) for Reflection
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
Jesus confronted His disciples with a very crucial question, first from the perspective of the general public (v.13). People generally recognise Jesus as special, a great man, a prophet, miracle worker.
Islam and other religions also have similar views about Jesus. Jesus pressed further to know if His disciples have a better understanding beyond these common and perverted views of Him and hence, directed the same question to them (v.15).
You can imagine the dead silence that filled the atmosphere until Peter broke this with a superb answer (v.16). This bold confession opened a new chapter for the work of the Church of Christ. It is the foundation upon which Christianity is built.
Notice, however, the source of Peter’s response (v.17). “Flesh and blood” means natural ability, academic research or such like. True knowledge of Christ only comes through revelation from God. Peter’s declaration separates Christianity from other religions. It establishes the deity and mission of Jesus Christ on the earth.
Our Saviour is God Himself who came down in human form to take our death upon Himself. Can we ever appreciate Him enough? Read vs.18-19 again and meditate on the authority of the believer and the Church.
• And so? Do you recognize Jesus as the Son of the living God and the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
• O God, reveal to me the person of your Son, Jesus Christ. • Pray against causes of climate change, war and other factors that could lead to famine and other disasters.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Deuteronomy 2:7; • Deut. 13-15; Acts 4:1-22
