Outline:
INTRODUCTION TO 1 KINGS 17-22
Read the preamble to this portion of the history of Israel from 1 Kings 16:29-34. In Chapters 17-22, we shall see some parallels between then and now in our contemporary Africa. Many of the countries are under the rulership of evil men and women who could be described as Ahabs. We shall observe and learn from the attendant problems and the challenges they pose to the body of Christ. It is our prayer that God shall raise for Himself and the integrity of His name and His Church, men and women who understand Him and shall ‘roll up their sleeves’ and face the challenges head-on.
When evil reigns in any community, country or continent, the first thing God looks for is not a reformed economic policy, or powerful politicians. We never heard of Elijah before this time, and neither do we have an account of his genealogy (read v.1 again). But God chose him to deliver His message at this time because of his faithfulness to God and dedicated service (v.1).
Many of the ‘men of God’ we have today are interested in serving their own selfish ambitions, caring less about the people of God they are called to lead. We need men of God who serve God (v.1), know His Word and hear His instructions clearly on daily basis (vs.2-7). Such people can speak the truth in love and help expose sin. Take time to reflect on the encounter between Elijah and the widow in vs.9-15.
Our God is able to meet our needs in unexpected ways. We only must always rely on Him. “There will be no dew or rain during the next few years …” (v.1b) was the surest way to let King Ahab and the people know that God was supreme over Baal. They considered Baal the god of rain and great harvest.
Have faith in God because He is supreme, and our sufficiency comes from Him alone (2 Peter 1:3)!
