MESSAGE

Memorials were common during Old Testament times and the Lord Jesus Christ instituted the Holy Communion for us in remembrance of the great sacrifice He offered to reconcile us to God (Luke 22:19, 20). Governments the world over erect statues or name buildings, roads and schools in honour and memory of great people.

After the heat between Jacob and Laban had subsided, they agree to make a covenant and erect a memorial to their new understanding (v.45). God was also invited as the main witness (vs.49‐50). God is with us every time and everywhere. Our consciousness of His presence must keep us from reneging on our promises or doing things that would displease Him. Notice the specific things the two agreed on with firm promises or oath (vs.52‐53).

They also had a meal fellowship and the covenant was sealed with the blood of the sacrificial animal (v.54). Think through all these in terms of our covenant with God through Jesus Christ. All is well that ends well. What Laban longed for earlier in v.27‐28 became fulfilled in v.55. They all left happily at last.

Closing Prayer
• Lord, grant us patience and wisdom in dealing with problems, especially interpersonal.

2 Corinthians 9:8; 2 Kings 3, 4; Revelation 2
