SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR JANUARY 6, 2022 (NOT WITHOUT HONOUR EXCEPT……)
TEXT: Luke 4:22-30
TOPIC: Not without honour except….
It is easy for us to condemn the people of Jesus’ village for failing to believe in
Him. But imagine if a boy you grew up together as children in your street were to start claiming to be the saviour of the world. The Jews were expecting the Messiah but not one who grew up in the next hut. They all acknowledged Jesus’ authority and great teachings (v.22) but beyond that ….? It is commonly said that, ‘familiarity
That was the experience of many prophets, both those who came before Jesus, including Elijah and Elisha (vs.25 28, cf. 1 Kings 17:8-16; 2 Kings 5:1-14), and many today. Had Jonah proclaimed the same message that changed the lives of the people of Nineveh (Jonah 3) to his own people, who knows how they would have responded. In many countries, anyone who dares proclaim the truth of salvation and the inevitable judgment to come, faces ridicule, persecution or even death (cf. vs.28-29).
Yet many faithful Jews received blessings from the intervention of the prophets of their day. See 2 Kings 4:1-9. Let us, as we hear God’s message proclaimed today, never allow unbelief or familiarity to rob us ofits blessings.
Prayer: Lord, as I meditate upon your word daily help me to fully believe it and so blessed by it.
