Topic: Love God, Love Your Neighbour
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: Matthew 22:34-46
Question(s) for Reflection
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
The Jewish leaders are relentless in their effort to trap Jesus (v.35). This Pharisee may be a genuine seeker of the truth, but all are impressed by Jesus’ wise answer. See how the ten commandments of Exodus 20:1-17 are summarized in vs.37-39. Why do you think Jesus did this?
Man’s first responsibility is to love God, and then reflect this in his love for his neighbours (see how Christ clarifies this in Matthew 25:31-46).
Love is primarily a matter of doing, not feeling. It is an attitude of loyal obedience that governs a person’s mind, will and emotions. We do not only need knowledge of the Scriptures to silence the devil, but for other profitable purposes also. Can you think of some of these?
In vs.41–46, Jesus now questions the Pharisees on His own identity. “What do you think about the Christ” (v.42)? Jesus is still asking believers this question today. However, it takes God’s revelation for one to know that Jesus is both human and divine. The Pharisees saw only the human aspect, as many sects do today.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Pray that Christians will show God’s love across racial, tribal, religious, and denominational backgrounds and that God may fill you with His love, so you can show true love to all around you. • Thank God for your place of work/business/study.
