TOPIC: ON THAT CROSS, HE FORGOT THE PAST
BASIC SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 12:1-2
1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
PHILIPPIANS 2: 5-11
5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
A ‘weight’ is anything that takes your focus off God and off the things of God. A “weight” is anything that consumes more of your time, energy and resources than the things that God has called you to do. Those things are good and fun, but they are just not contributing to your success and progress as far as God is concerned. A WEIGHT CAN EVEN BE A FRIEND THAT DOES NOT FIRE YOU UP IN SPIRITUAL THINGS! One of the hallmarks of great men is the ability to focus.
Hebrews 12 shows us that Jesus laid aside the weights and fixed His gaze on the joy that was set before Him. Philippians 2 says that He was in the form of God, but He had to let go of His rights and privileges as God, in order to come into our messy world to redeem us. HE MADE HIMSELF OF NO REPUTATION AND TOOK UPON HIMSELF THE FORMOF ASERVANT. He stooped So low, for you and me. And because of that, He was able to fulfil His purpose: to restore man back to his place of dominion and glory.
