Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 August 2023
The account of king Amaziah is a typical story of a good start and a poor finish. His mother most likely had a positive influence on him (v.2). He obeyed God’s laws instead of standard practices of his day, executing the conspirators who murdered his father (2 Kings 12:21) but sparing their children (v.6). What are some of the practices today, whether cultural or traditional rites that can go against God’s word? How can Amaziah’s example be a positive influence in your life?
Amaziah trusts the Lord for victory over Edom without the help of the men of Israel (v.7 cf. 2 Chronicles 25:5-12). Note however that immediately afterwards, he bowed down to the gods of the Edomites and his heart became arrogant. In his pride, he overestimated his military strength, challenged the king of Israel to a fight and would not listen to sound warnings (vs.8-11). Pride led to stubbornness and stubbornness brought disaster to him and his kingdom (vs.12-14). Unfortunately, this sad ending is typical of some countries and individuals today.
Practice/Word Application And so? Learn from Amaziah the consequence of arrogance and pride.
For Further Study : Read Proverbs 11:2; 16:18; 18:12; James 4:6 and Luke 18:9-14 to learn more on where arrogance and pride can lead us to.
