Topic: ABRAHAM, FATHER OF THE FAITHFUL
Bible Text: Romans 4:1-12
“And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. So then, he is the father of all who believe, but have not been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them.” Romans 4:11, NIV
There was a story by Dr. Johnson of a worthy father who was hiking along a mountainside. From behind him, his son called out “Take care, father, take a safe path, for I am coming after you.”
The origin of the word “father” expresses community of nature or character and often applies to the head or founder of any school or class or men whose character or manner of life is determined by their relation to the person that has designated them as father.
*Abraham received the promise by faith and not by the law. God justified him before the law was given and before he was circumcised or did any work (vs.13). So, Abraham is the “father” of all Gentiles who believed without circumcision. He is also the father of the believing Jews.*
The Jews and the Gentiles are therefore children of Abraham and they are alike simply because they are justified by faith. Abraham leaves us an example of a father who “hiked” the path of faith to receive justification.
As believers, we must always remember that others are following us and observing how faithful we are. How faithful are you to God and fellow human beings? You too can be like Abraham, by staying faithful in all situations.
Insight: You are justified by your faith in Christ Jesus.
Prayer: Thank You LORD, for accepting me through faith in You. Help me to remain faithful.
