Topic: GOD’S COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM
Bible Text: Genesis 15:1-8
“He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the heavens and count the stars – if indeed you can count them.’ Then he said to him, ‘so shall your offspring be.’” Genesis 15:5
At a point in his life, Dr Barnabé Assohoto, a theologian and coordinator of Faith in Action International in Republic of Benin said, some of those who loved him felt that some wicked people were seeking evil power to harm him.
From two different sources, he received plaques engraved with the words of Isaiah 54:17 “No weapon forged against you will prevail.” Whenever his eyes caught these words, he would feel a sense of assurance that he was well defended by God’s presence.
Abraham returned from a war where he defeated a coalition of five powerful kings and rescued Lot, his nephew and others. He may have felt that there would be a reprisal attack on him and his family. It was then God appeared to him in a vision. Abraham complained about his childlessness too.
To address these two issues that made Abraham tremble with fear, hopelessness and despair, God renewed His covenant with him. God told him, “Do not be afraid Abram, I am your shield and your very great reward”. Abraham believed God and he was counted righteous.
*God is not a man that He should lie; whatever He has promised will be fulfilled. Therefore, believe God’s promise today and you shall be established.*
Insight: Without faith in God, you will live in despair.
Prayer: Father, let my heart be established by faith in You.
