TOPIC: LOVE OF MONEY, ROOT OF EVIL
Bible Text: 1 Timothy 6:6-10
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” I Timothy 6:10, NIV
It is reported that the wealth of the ten richest people in the world today keeps increasing. Also, the 100 richest people in the world control over half of the financial resources of the world. However, the rich always wants to get richer and they strive to attain this through either legal or illegal means.
Today’s scripture points us to the fact that the problem of man is not money but man’s insatiable love for money. The lack of contentment that Paul warned Timothy about was brought about by the belief that it is only through monetary possession that we can be content. However, as Paul stresses, a combination of contentment and godliness is great gain. Being wealthy is not bad but when we become desperate to get wealth then it is ungodly. Money is good, but the love of money has made many people do a lot of wrong things.
Your desire to become wealthy must be measured alongside your desire to be godly. There is nothing that can be compared to godly contentment. Everything we possess on earth will end in this world. What we will take to heaven is our godliness. As much as you may desire to be rich and have as many possessions as you desire, be careful not to throw away your godliness.
Insight: Godliness with contentment is great gain.
Prayer: Father, fill me with the spirit of contentment.
