TOPIC: THE DAY OF PENTECOST
Bible Text: Acts 2:1-12
“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” Acts 2:4, NIV
MESSAGE
The greatest event that shaped Christianity in the first century after the death of Jesus is the Pentecost. Pentecost is the fiftieth day after the feast of Passover, a Jewish festival commanded by God. Before His ascension, Jesus had instructed the disciples to wait in Jerusalem in expectation of the promised Holy Spirit. They returned, waited in prayer and they received the Holy Spirit.
The passage read gives a vivid account of how the disciples were united in one place when the Holy Spirit came upon them. He descended like tongues of fire on each of them. Then, they were all filled the Holy Spirit and spoke in unlearned languages. This experience attracted the Jews and visitors from every nation including Africa who undoubtedly came for the festival. These worshippers heard the disciples declaring the wonders of God in their native language.
Believers in Christ can experience another “Pentecost” and be filled with the Holy Spirit if we will be humble enough to seek God with the whole of our heart. Seek Jesus genuinely to empower you to be an effective witness of Him like the disciples. If you are empty now, pray to be filled with His presence and power.
Insight: The Holy Spirit is God’s agent of transformation in the world through the believers.
Prayer: Father, fill me afresh with the Holy Spirit and empower me for Your service.
