Bible Text: Mark 10:17-22
TOPIC: ONLY GOD IS GOOD
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good – except God alone…” Mark 10:18, NIV
Teachers usually give students who perform well in a given class work or home exercise, positive reinforcements such as “very good performance” or “excellent work” in their class note to encourage them. These kinds of comments usually excite students, and sometimes make them feel pompous and look down on classmates who perform poorly.
Today’s passage reveals how Jesus refused to be carried away with the use of the adjective, “good” to qualify Him. He rather replied, “no one is good – except God alone” (vs. 18). The response of Jesus showed that He will not take the glory due to God for Himself. Every good thing that comes out of a child of God is a product of God’s goodness, “for every good and perfect gift is from above…” (James 1:17).
Although, Jesus was both God and man, He chose to submit His rights always to God as man. We, as believers, must carry this same mind that Jesus had. We must always recognize God as the only One who is good and does good things through us.
What is your reaction when your good works are not recognized by men? Do you brag about your good performance at school or work? Remember, only God is good! Give Him the glory.
Insight: God’s goodness is the basis of man’s good works.
Prayer: Lord, make me a channel of Your good life and deeds every day and everywhere.
