MESSAGE
It is normally easier to see the fault in others than in oneself. According to the German philosopher, Friedrich Hegel, “What history teaches us is that we learn nothing from history.” Were we learning from history, we would not just highlight what went wrong in the past but avoid repeating the same thing in another form. The Pharisees were quick to identify what their forefathers did wrong, yet, they had secret plans to kill another ‘prophet’- the Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth.
See John 11:53. Not only Jesus but many of Christ’s disciples were also, in line with His words (v.34), flogged unjustly and brutally murdered – James, Stephen, Paul, are examples. Vs.37-39: An adage says: “The dog that is set to get lost will not respond to the hunter’s whistle”. Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 AD.
Jesus came for the nation of Israel, but He was not welcome just as the prophets who came before Him (vs.37-38). The Pharisees and the scribes chose not to listen to Him. God deserted Israel and gave it over to the enemies as a punishment (v.38). The word of God is proclaimed in different ways all over our continent. We also hear it clearly as we read and meditate on the Bible each day. Unless we listen attentively and act upon these words, we risk the same condemnation as Jerusalem.
