Topic: Life Beyond The Grave
Opening Prayer: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.
Scripture: Matthew 22:23-33
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
Today, the Sadducees, who do not believe in life after death, take centre stage. Notice how, through their fabricated story, they hoped to show the ‘absurdity’ of the resurrection and vindicate their false belief (vs.24-28). Jesus hit the nail on the head as He exposed their ignorance on two levels (see v.29).
Any time we too try to base our understanding of eternal issues on logic or images and experiences of present life, we err and exhibit our ignorance of God’s power and His word. Our life hereafter will not be the same as life in this world (v.30; c.f., 1 Corinthians 15:35-50). Unfortunately, ignorance of God’s word is not limited to the Sadducees.
We too are all liable to error and sin if we do not understand what God teaches in His word. This is the reason we must meditate on the Bible daily. Then we can know and understand God’s mind and power. As we believe what we read and remember to apply it to our lives, we will avoid the error of the Jewish leaders and false teachers of our day.
Practice/Word Application
• And so? Why is life after death so important to our Christian faith?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
• Dear God, help me not to worry about those things that I do not understand but to trust in you and your word. •
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Deuteronomy 28:7;Psalms 70-71; Acts 25
