MESSAGE
Based on yesterday’s argument with the Pharisees, the Lord called on a larger audience to teach a specific lesson. The Pharisees and the teachers of the religious laws had taught people that some foods are forbidden because they defile people. Notice the Lord’s teaching on this in vs.15-19 (compare Peter’s vision in Acts 10:9-15). “It’s not what goes into your body that defiles you; you are defiled by what comes from your heart” (vs.14-16)
This, however, does not mean we can eat just anything. We may need to avoid eating some food on medical grounds. What lessons can we learn from the disciples’ private session with the Lord (v.17)? That emphasizes the importance of our daily devotion (quiet time) with Jesus. There are all kinds of teachings going on around us daily. The wise disciples spend time with the Lord to search the His Word further and be guided aright (read Acts 17:11).
Practice/Word Application
Meditate on vs.20-23 (see also Psalm 14:1 and Proverb 4:23). What thoughts fill your heart – love or lust? What words come out of your mouth – curses or blessing?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Create in me a clean heart, O Lord, and renew a right spirit within me (Psalm 51:10).
One Year Bible Reading Plan
