MESSAGE
The incident in vs.24-25 is very strange. Finally, Moses was now on his way to fulfil God’s special mission to deliver Israel. Now, God wants to kill him! Why?
Moses had to learn the lesson of absolute obedience to God’s commands. One of those commands was that ALL the male descendants of Abraham were to be circumcised (Genesis 17:9-14). It was the sign of God’s covenant with him. Evidently, Moses was already circumcised, and one of his two boys, but not the other. God was going to have no exceptions when it comes to obedience to His commands. It was not one rule for Moses as leader and a different rule for the rest of the people.
Even Moses was not indispensable if he would not obey God; and the fact that his Midianite wife found circumcision distasteful was irrelevant (v.25). Once that was settled, the business on hand could continue. God was already at work, prompting Aaron to meet his brother whom he had not seen for many years (v.27). For both of them, the adventure of faith began on a very promising note (vs.29-31). They would soon face the counterattack of the enemy.
