MESSAGE
In my country, there are people who left great wealth for their families, but their children chose wrong lifestyles of recklessness, and today they are as poor as everyone who never had such opportunity. Such is the story of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was privileged to inherit a united, peaceful and the wealthiest kingdom on earth. But he squandered it on the altar of wrong choices. Life can present us with great and wonderful opportunities but what we choose to do with them will determine the result we get.
Read vs.12‐14 again and identify the choices that Rehoboam made. He chose to reject the good advice of the elders (vs.6‐7) and rather abide by the wicked advice of sycophants (vs.10‐11). What did he get in return (vs.16‐19; Proverbs 16:18)? What lesson is there for us in the way we carry out our leadership roles? If we chose to be insensitive, arrogant and power drunk, we will reap a harvest of shame and disgrace. Similarly, if we reject the opportunity of salvation that God has given us freely in Christ, we will find ourselves to blame (John 3:16).
Practice/Word Application
And So: The advice you take and choices you make today will determine your future. Think through and outline some godly guidelines you can follow to safeguard yourself from making wrong choices. Pray for spirit of discernment and courage to choose rightly.
