TOPIC: ORDERLINESS IN WORSHIP
Bible Text: 1 Corinthians 14:26-33a
Memory Verse: “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace…” 1 Corinthians 14:33a, NIV
The proper use of Spiritual gifts has generated controversies right from the first century. The Church at Corinth had issues and the present day church still struggles with the correct manifestations of these gifts in corporate worship. Paul’s instruction in 1 Corinthians 14:26-33a addresses disorder in worship.
Apostle Paul instructs that worship is for building up (1 Corinthians 14:26); tongues must be interpreted in worship (1 Corinthians 14:27-28) or else the speaker keeps quiet; only few persons can prophesy in worship (1 Corinthians 14:29-31); and, worship must be orderly (1 Corinthians 14:32-33a). Paul’s teaching can be summarized thus: (i) Spiritual gifts are for the common good and not for personal aggrandizement; (ii) The use of spiritual gifts in worship must be guided by certain regulations, and (iii) God’s character of peace must reflect during public worship.
Are you using your spiritual gifts out of pride or for selfish reasons? Don’t think of yourself higher than others because of your gifts, every gift has uniqueness. Be humble and grateful to God for whatever gifts He has given you. As you join others in corporate worship, ensure that you use your spiritual gifts only for mutual edification and as an empowerment for building up the church and extending the kingdom of God. Make no room for self-aggrandizement. Worship must be orderly.
Insight: “The changes required in Christian worship can best be derived through the application of the biblical principles of worship.” John Akinjide Adeyemo (2019).
Prayer: Lord, help me to use my spiritual gifts to edify the body of Christ.
