Opening Prayer: Lord, I pray that you lead me into your truth as I meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any command for me to obey?

Parents brought their children to Jesus so that He could pray over and bless them. There are many ways in which adults, like the disciples, hinder children from coming to Jesus; by what we do (commit) or fail to do (omit). What is your contribution to organizations like Scripture Union which are bringing children to Jesus daily? Jesus commands us to receive ‘the kingdom of God like a little child’ (v.17).

Young children display complete trust. What other features of children do you think Jesus has in mind? The ruler came to Jesus seeking eternal life (v.18) and Jesus referred him to five commandments that deal with our person‐to‐person relationships. The ruler claimed to have kept these (v.21). Do you think he was being truthful (see Mark 10:20‐21)? What commandments that Jesus did not mention had he not kept?

See Exodus 20:3‐6, cf., Colossians 3:5b. Jesus then told this upright young man that he still lacked ‘one thing’ (v.22). How would you explain this ‘one thing’ in your own words? The ruler sadly turned away from Jesus without finding eternal life (v.23). What prevented his search from being successful? Compare his response to Jesus with Matthew 22:37‐38.
